Tragic accident claims two young lives

Monday, January 30, 2012

A tragic accident claimed the life of two students Sunday, authorities claim.

Gloria Vasquez and Maricela Munoz, both residents of Norfolk, Virginia, were traveling in Vasquez' 1998 Taurus on Interstate 264 through the Downtown Tunnel late Sunday evening when a section of the tunnel apparently exploded, trapping the Vasquez and Munoz in a pile of rubble, say engineers with the Norfolk Transportation Safety Board.

"We believe an electrical fire might have been the initial cause of the accident," states Louis Dawson, a safety engineer with the Board.

So far, no witnesses to the accident have been found, though police were quick to mention that neither alcohol nor a high rate of speed are being considered factors in the accident.

Vasquez and Munoz were both majoring in psychology at nearby Portsmouth Community College. Munoz was engaged to be married to her high school sweetheart, Michael Farnetti, at the end of the month.

"I'm determined to get to the bottom of this no matter how long it takes," said Farnetti, of Farnetti and Sons Contracting, which earlier this year made headlines due to the sudden death of company founder John Robert Farnetti, Michael's father, which made the younger Farnetti the majority stockholder in the Fortune 500 architectural firm.

Portsmouth Community College students had just recently mourned the death of another of its own, Portsmouth resident Shaun Jacobs.

"At times like these, it makes you thankful for what you have," said a student who wished not to be named.

The Downtown Tunnel remains closed for an indefinite period of time, pending investigation and repair.

SANDSTORM procedures are proceeding smoothly.

The exposure following Operation Withered Perennial is believed to have been limited to, at most, seven individuals. Subsequent blackout procedures have been successful; offending sites have been taken down.

Data transfer may have taken place prior, or immediately following, Eagle Two’s failed distraction. Analysts suspect that Grey Fox members may have been real world acquaintances as well and may have transferred the stolen information by hand or through various social networking sites.

Portsmouth Man found Dead in Apparent Suicide; Police Suspect Foul Play

Portsmouth, Virginia native Shaun Jacobs was found dead in his apartment Friday in what was an apparent suicide by a gunshot to the head.
Jacobs’ body was found in the basement of the East End apartment the 26 year old man shared with his mother, who was at work the night of the suicide, by a friend who had come to visit to ask him about a video game, police say.
“I thought I’d come by, and, y’know, ask him what server he was going to play on after the expansion,” said Christian Miller, Jacobs’ friend and classmate in the local community college. “I opened up the screen door and went into the basement, and that’s when I saw him. I thought he was just asleep at the computer, but when I got closer, I knew. That’s when I saw he was dead.”
Jacobs, who was recently unemployed following a work injury, was an avid player of the online video game World of Warcraft, his mother says. The game was running on the screen and his character was logged in when Miller found him dead.
“I don’t think it had anything to do with the game,” said Miller. “He wasn’t as serious as some people get about those kinds of things. I mean, he didn’t get out much, sure, but it was more like he was…busy all the time, or something. He hadn’t even played much recently because his internet was down for a while.”
According to Verizon, the Jacobs’ internet service had been temporarily disconnected after a large amount of bandwidth use had been detected on Jacobs’ IP address.
However, police have reason to believe that foul play might have had a part in Jacobs’ death.
“At this time, we are unable to disclose any official information about the investigation,” said Portsmouth Police Lieutenant Gregory Fawn. “However, we have reason to believe Mr. Jacobs’ death was not a suicide.”
Memorial services are scheduled for Tuesday in what is to be a private family service.

Shaun Jacobs was a man living in Portsmouth, Virginia whose death from an apparent suicide and the subsequent media blackout that followed caused international discussions regarding the United States' involvement in the business of states following the broadening of the Patriot Act after the annexation of Afghanistan and parts of former Iraq in late 2010.

Personal Life

Born Shaun Tyrone Jacobs in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Shaun and his mother, Lucinda Mykell Grant, moved to Portsmouth in 1996 after the breakup of Lucinda and Shaun's father, Austin Jacobs, a former United States Marine. There, Lucinda took up work as an anesthesiologist at a local dentistry practice, while young Shaun attended the public school system.

Shaun graduated from Portsmouth Regional High School with honors, and originally planned to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), majoring in internet security, but dropped his application from the waiting list unexpectedly following his mother's diagnosis of advanced stage breast cancer.

Despite unfavorable odds, Shaun's mother survived her bout with cancer, and later that year, Shaun began attending Portsmouth Community College as a freshman, majoring in computer science.

Death and Controversy

Death

On the night of Friday, January 6, 2012, Shaun Jacobs was found dead at his computer, with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, by his friend and classmate Christan Miller. Shaun's mother, Lucinda, returned home that evening to find the police already there. Lucinda, Miller, and their immediate family are now under witness protection protocols, despite the death having been ruled a suicide by Portsmouth head coroner Michael Davies.

Within a few days of Jacobs' death, word spread through the US World of Warcraft forums and through internet sites such as YouTube and 4chan, with some sites adopting a mocking tone, and others offering what appeared to be genuine sentiment. Jacobs' guild in World of Warcraft, the Grey Fox Organization, named after a mysterious thief in the video game The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, performed a memorial service in game for Jacobs and for his character, Chrysanth (which was raided by the enemy guild Golden Sunrise twice during the service, despite pleas from both sides for peace on the World of Warcraft forums).

Controversy

Several events preceding and following Jacobs' death have been noted by both the press and the population in general.

First, two weeks before Jacobs' death, he received, by email, a

Second, almost immediately following Jacobs' memorial service in World of Warcraft, when GFO players, some friends of Jacobs, were meeting, all World of Warcraft servers went down for exactly twelve minutes, at which time certain data was analyzed, modified, and/or removed from the server, according to unnamed World of Warcraft GUI hackers. Blue posts (posts made by Blizzard developers and forum moderators) have described the incident as arising "due to the massive server load in one area from the fighting between GFO and GS players".

Third, statements made by Jacobs' friends and family show him as a person unlikely to commit suicide. According to one close friend, "Jacobs was always a really happy, really fun guy. He was always playing tricks and showing off. He was really good with computers - I mean, really, really good - and he knew he had a bright future. I can't imagine why he would have killed himself."

United Nations to declare portion of Antarctica to be World’s Largest International Preserve
Geneva, Switzerland

The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in talks with leaders from Chile, Argentina, the United Kingdom, and the United States, came to an agreement Friday to declare parts of Antarctica an international preserve, which would protect portions of the world’s coldest continent from mining, drilling, and territorial occupation. The movement to create the preserve was spearheaded by UNESCO Special Projects director Saul Londebergh.
The preserve, located on Antarctica’s northwestern Ronne Ice Shelf, will be nearly 1.5 million square kilometers, making it the world’s largest preserve, easily eclipsing the previous record holder, the Krau Wildlife Preserve in Pahang, Malaysia. The area includes portions of Berkner Island and the Weddell Sea.
Opposition to the preserve came from many countries, with the most vociferous arguments coming from both Donald Baker, chairman of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Ways and Means division and Xao Zhifong, representative of the Republic of China’s Future Forward movement.
“We feel that Antarctica should not be under the control of any one organization or governing body,” said Zhifong.
When asked by reporters, Baker denied comment, simply stating that the U.S. intends to “protect vital interests in the region.”
When asked what exactly there was to preserve in Antarctica, technically the world’s largest desert, Londebergh stated:
“Our future, and our children’s future.”

Internal Incident Report #5744
Filed 12/19/2011 15:30 hrs
Lt. Robert Dawson, Anomaly Control

At 01:13 hrs Spc. Warton and Spc. Morrigan, while updating server structure on Server 19: PAGODA II, found a self-reproducing redundant line of code in VEIL-3 at line 11945.47.12. They quickly took efforts to isolate and quarantine the code, and at 01:57 hrs server structure was taken off Code Yellow status and security lockdown was lifted. Subsequent analysis of the code’s origin has so far failed to produce any actionable leads. Communications with VEIL-1 and VEIL-2 stations have conveyed the importance of meticulous investigation of their code, while VEIL-4, offline at the time of the incident pending program updates, has not been brought back online until this matter is resolved.
Due to the fact that we, at this time, do not know the extent of any damage or information leak, we recommend initiation of SANDSTORM procedures until such time as the situation is properly resolved.
For further details, contact me or Anomaly Control Division 2nd Lt. Andrew Stevens.

Hello, Chrysanthemum. It’s been too long.
I know that my superiors were overly harsh with you when you last left us. Please understand that it was not easy on any of us at that time. The global view of our country has always been suspect, and you were an unfortunate expenditure that we simply could not maintain in the days following the awakening of the giant. I hope that you know you were always wanted, and your efforts were always appreciated.
But I’ll get to the point, and I won’t waste any more of your time. Simply stated, my superiors and I wish to hire your services once again. I can assure you your payment will be, as always, quite absurdly high. But then again, you never cared about the money, did you?
I’ll make sure information is available to you in our usual place.
We’ll meet soon. I look forward to it.
